Budget Place to Stay

MATUMAU  LODGE


It's located 50 meter away from Mulu airport.  They charged reasonable price for accomodation and food.  Although it is not well known Matumau is creatively furnish with all the essential needs.  The food serve here is cheap and very generous portions. Room is spacious and clean. The bed is comfortable. The lodge provides bikes to use to get to National Park.

Another alternative accomodation.  It has more rooms.  Affortable room rates.

It is a nice place to stay and not very far from Royal Mulu.   Royal Mulu is just across the river.  Has deluxe long house rooms.

Sarawak has an equatorial climate. The Equator cross a town in Kalimantan. The weather is generally dry and warm. The temperature is within the range of 23°C to 32°C throughout the year. Humidity is very high on the lowlands ranging from 85 per cent to 95 per cent per annum. The average rainfall per year is between 3,300 mm and 4,600 mm.

The wettest months are from November to February.  So if you plan to travel during this period get your umbrella ready.  From March to September weather is expected to be warmer and less rain.  However, at night the temperature can be very low due to latitude and rain forest.

 CAVES - Guided Tours

Caving

Mulu is of the largest limestones caves in the World.  It is also one of the World Heritage.

IMPORTANT NOTICES : Visitors are not permitted to enter any of the caves within the Park without a Licensed Park Guide.

Daily tours are available and can be arrange at Mulu World Heritage Guides.  Guided tour will bring you to all the four show caves in the Park.

Reservations for the show caves are not essential.  You could call the Park office to enquire about the fees.

Getting There

Mulu or Mulu National Park is located at northern Sarawak.  It offers spectacular limestone landscapes.  U can reach there by taking a flight from Kuching the capital of Sarawak to the nearest town that is Miri.  Sarawak is part of Malaysia.  It sits on Borneo Island.  From there you can arrange to go there by river or flight (Twin Otter).   If you are adventurous you could go by river.  Along the Baram river you could have spectacular rain forest experiences.

By Plane

You can take Malaysian Airlines Twin Otter aircraft (19 seater) from Miri to Mulu. Mulu does not have international airport.  So only twin otter aircraft is available.  The journey takes about 45 minutes.  The ride is comfortable on a sunny nice weather.  When it is cloudy and rainy day the ride can be quite uncomfortable.

By Boat

 Alternatively, you can choose to go by boat.  Mulu is accessible by boat from  Marudi.  Marudi is a small town located on Baram River. You can take boat ride from Miri to Marudi.  Anyway this is the only mode of transport to Marudi.  There is no road between Miri and Marudi.  In order to get to Mulu you need to take boat ride along Baram River. The boat will travel all day up to Baram, Tutoh and Melinau.  There is no regular boat service.  The boat service may be cancell without prior notices.  However longboats can be chartered or pre arrange at the tourist center in Miri. There are many local tour operator offers boat passage to Mulu.  
 
Although it is adventurous a boat ride will let you see the interior part of Sarawak on a closer view. The only access is via logging roads which can be locked and the condition is very poor.  No busses, taxis or other public transport available.  This part of Sarawak is very under populated.  Majority of the ethnics residing here are Sarawak natives such as Penans, Berawan, Muruds, Kayan and Lunbawang.  Do not expect them to converse in English.  However the tour guide will assist and help to make necessary arrangement.

The journey by boat require a physically fit person.  If the river water is shallow the boat cannot get through.  You may end up helping to push the boat along the riverbank and hike in the rainforest.

The cost of boat rides may end up the same as taking flight.  If the rides is smooth it takes 10 hours to reach the National Park from Marudi.

Once you arrive you will be charged Rm10 per person for each day that you enter the park.
